Part-Time Teacher Wanted @ Citizen Schools in New York, NY

Citizen Schools seeks a talented, enthusiastic, and diverse cohort of educators to serve as Teaching Associates in New York City.  Citizen Schools currently partners with six schools in NYC:
1 in Brooklyn, 2 in East Harlem, 1 in West Harlem, and 2 in the Bronx, and there are positions available at each campus.  The position begins with a summer training series this upcoming August and is for the entire 2012 – 2013 school year.

Citizen Schools partners with traditional public middle schools to add three hours of learning to the end of the school day.  Teaching Associates work as part of a “second shift” of educators to deliver three areas of content to our students: an academic curriculum (Math or ELA, depending on the school’s needs), a college readiness curriculum specifically created for middle school students, and our signature program element, “apprenticeships,” which are hands-on learning projects led by volunteers.
Teaching Associates lead a team of 15 – 19 students and in addition to the curriculum listed above, also serve as academic coaches for students, helping them set ambitious goals for the school year and holding them to high expectations.  TAs serve as “connectors” for students – communicating regularly with families, “first shift” teachers, administrative staff, volunteers, and Citizen Schools staff about the progress of their students.

Teaching Associates work approximately 30 hours per week.  Schedules vary by campus, but all Teaching Associates will work at least 1pm – 6:30pm Monday through Thursday, with additional hours on Fridays for meetings and professional development.  In addition to time spent on campus, TAs also have self-managed hours each week for preparation and communication.

Successful applicants will demonstrate competence in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Citizen Schools’ mission
  • Demonstrated ability to engage students in groups
  • Commitment to student achievement
  • Academic skills – proficiency in middle school Math and English
  • Coaching skills - ability to provide and receive constructive feedback
  • Superior time management and problem solving skills
  • Community building skills – willingness to engage numerous stakeholders, including families and volunteers
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Embodiment of Citizen Schools’ values: Pride, Joy, Respect, Courage, Teamwork, Perseverance, and  Vision
  • Bachelor’s degree or be in pursuit of a completing a college degree
  • Proficiency in critical languages, specifically Spanish or Haitian Creole, a plus
Compensation and Benefits

The hourly rate starts at $15.00, and typically increases for TAs who work with Citizen Schools for multiple semesters. TAs receive training and will have opportunities for professional development and growth. In addition, compensation for TAs includes time off, access to health benefits, and 403b Retirement Plan.
